The tall and the short of vertical videos.

If you’re a media creator or keen for better video completion rates, it’s time to start using vertical videos. Not only are vertical videos now widely used due to the prevalence of smartphones, but they also are immersive and leave no room for distractions as they fill up the entire handheld screen.

Stand out with videos that stand tall across social media and digital advertising channels such as:

  • Instagram stories
  • Instagram feed posts
  • IGTV
  • Facebook stories
  • Facebook Advertising
  • YouTube Music videos
  • Snapchat Snaps
  • Digital billboards
  • In-app advertising

Vertical videos invite you to be creative!

Make the most out of Instagram with vertical videos!

  • In the Instagram app, tap the camera icon in the top left of your screen. Or, swipe right from anywhere in the feed.
  • Choose a video from your phone’s library or gallery.
  • Edit video, add text and stickers to your video. To remove anything you have added, hold it and drag it to the bottom of the screen.
  • When ready to share your video, tap "Your Story"

When creating your vertical video, keep the Stories interface in mind, so that it doesn’t overlap the video. You should avoid placing text right at the top or bottom.

The dimensions for the highest quality vertical video (or portrait mode video) are 1080 pixels wide by 1920 pixels high (1080x1920), full HD in portrait orientation. Vertical videos have an aspect ratio of 9:16, and are taller than they are wide.

  • Use the space wisely, fill with text and other graphics can help compliment the taller frame.
  • Avoid fast pans or too much horizontal movement as the field of view is narrower.
  • Vertical videos are perfect for that up close and personal shot. Focus on the subject, don’t be afraid to zoom in to highlight the details.
  • If creating animations, set your aspect ratio from the beginning to ensure that your finished video fits the space correctly.
